Attack on Western Attica hospital by patient's relatives
On the evening of 7 July, relatives of a patient stormed the premises of Thriasio Hospital and attacked doctors and nurses. The incident was triggered by a delay in a CT scan examination of their patient.
According to statements made to newsit.gr by POEDHN president Michalis Giannakos, the incident began after 10 p.m. Two couples had arrived with a patient in a wheelchair outside the radiology department. The patient was suffering from an aneurysm and doctors had determined he required immediate intervention. However, another case of similar severity took priority, something that enraged those present.
The perpetrators destroyed the windows of the external clinics and whatever else they encountered on their way. During the attack, threats were heard such as "bring the weapon so we can wipe them out".
A similar incident occurred at Spata Health Centre the same evening. Eight people had gone there to treat injuries. When healthcare workers stated that a two-year-old child they had with them might need to be transferred to a paediatric hospital — something that ultimately proved unnecessary — the visitors caused damage and made threats with weapons. When police arrived, the adults had already left. Three were arrested and taken to a police station.
The POEDHN chief emphasised that the overwhelming majority of attacks against healthcare workers come from specific communities. He stated that the perpetrators use knives, pistols and Kalashnikovs. He called for increased police presence in hospitals, the reinstatement of a special protection unit and frequent patrols by the Hellenic Police.
