The elderly man was brought before the investigating magistrate, requesting and receiving an adjournment for his plea hearing on Tuesday. This development caused surprise among his relatives, who are supporting him and are seeking legal representation for his defence.
The small child was rushed to hospital by his grandfather himself on Friday evening, as his health condition had deteriorated dramatically. A few days earlier he had visited a paediatrician and had received medication.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, who attempted for 48 minutes to resuscitate him using CPR, the infant did not survive.
Upon hearing the tragic news, the child's grandfather lost consciousness, according to witness accounts.
From the evidence gathered so far, it emerges that the 45-year-old is caring for a second minor family member, who is facing health problems.
