Large crowds bid farewell to Vagia Nestor in Kozani

The funeral of Vagia Nestor was held today at the metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos in Kozani, according to newmoney.gr. The woman lost her life in an arson attack carried out by unknown assailants with incendiary devices at a family residence in Thessaloniki on 1 July.

Her daughter, Aphrodite Nestor, a New Democracy parliamentarian, arrived at the church by private ambulance after being discharged at her own responsibility from Papanikolaou Hospital, where she had been hospitalised. She held in her hands a bouquet of white flowers.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the funeral, arriving at the church accompanied by government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis. Wreaths were sent, among others, by President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulis, President of Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, President of PASOK Nikos Androulakis, President of SYRIZA Sokrates Famellos, as well as representatives of other parties.

Deputy Minister of Education, Religion and Sport Nikos Papaioannidis stated that "the past few days have been difficult", adding: "Murderers who strike innocent people with blind blows have no place in a democratic system."

Also moving was a public post by Irini Agapidaki: "Today we bid farewell to Vagia Nestor. The mother who was murdered on 1 July in Thessaloniki. Before she was violently uprooted from life, she experienced the loss of her daughter and was raising her grandchild. We stand beside Panayiotis who, after losing his daughter, is losing his wife too. Beside the child who lost his mother and now his grandmother. I do not know how one can remain indifferent to this horrific murder. Politics has value only when we are and remain human," she wrote.

The perpetrators of the attack remain unknown and the investigation by the authorities continues.
