Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidi categorically ruled out the possibility of a romantic relationship between the 43-year-old confessed perpetrator and the 45-year-old Stavrula, who was found dead in Chania.
"Nothing justifies this particular act," Ms Dimoglidi stressed, noting that the defendant's claim that there were disputes over the house he was renting from the victim is the only account he has provided so far.
Police are now focusing on the perpetrator's mobile telephone, which is expected to provide further information about the exact facts. He has described in detail the manner in which he took the life of the 45-year-old, however forensic findings are pending to determine whether his account corresponds with reality.
According to the spokesperson, the first macroscopic findings indicate that more than one means was used to commit the crime. "Essentially, until he completed his act and took her life, he did not stop," she added.
The police spokesperson also stressed that the 43-year-old had not been of concern to authorities for similar offences in the past, although he had been integrated into society and was employed in the area. His wife gave a statement during the preliminary investigation, with no problems reported by residents of the neighbourhood.
