Chania: 43-year-old tenant confesses to murder of 45-year-old Stavrula Leventaki
The body of a 45-year-old woman has been recovered from agricultural land in the Vatholakka area of Chania, following a confession by her 43-year-old tenant, who had been the main suspect in her disappearance two weeks ago. He guided police officers to the burial site.
According to evidence obtained, the victim was found bound with plastic straps on her limbs and with tape on her mouth, details that reveal the violence with which the perpetrator acted. The autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, 22 June, and is expected to shed light on the exact causes of death.
Following the completion of forensic work, an arrest warrant is expected to be issued against the suspect, who will be called to answer for the offence of intentional homicide.
The burial site was located in a visible and accessible spot, near dwellings and cultivated areas, something that surprised the prosecuting authorities. The area was placed under police cordon again following the discovery.
The investigation is now entering its judicial phase, whilst officers are investigating the motives behind the crime, the circumstances under which the unfortunate woman lost her life, and the possible deceptive actions on the part of the perpetrator during the investigation.
In parallel, other aspects of the 43-year-old's background are being examined. The accused changed his stance during the night, abandoning the rigid silence he had maintained following his arrest. He gave a detailed account of the events of the day of the murder and showed police officers the location where he had hidden the body.
