In a chilling manner, the 43-year-old Macedonian national described to police what took place inside the apartment in Chania, after he confessed to the murder of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki.
According to his account, the 45-year-old visited his home on 30 May to inspect the condition of the property. There, as he claims, a tension arose between them, which escalated. He maintained that he struck her on the head with a wine bottle, believing he had killed her.
However, as he describes it, the woman regained consciousness and began screaming for help. Then, according to his account, he returned to the room and stabbed her in the chest. When he realised she was still breathing, he struck her on the head with a piece of wood to finish her off.
The defendant gave a detailed account of the process of concealing the body. He is said to have mentioned that he used bags and cable ties to wrap the corpse, and subsequently transported it with his car to a remote rural area, where he buried it.
Of particular interest is his conduct after the crime. He is said to have admitted that he took the victim's bank cards, which he used at ATMs to withdraw the sum of 1,000 euros. As he claimed, he did this to create the impression that it was a robbery and to mislead the investigation.
Police are examining with scepticism the version presented by the perpetrator. According to reports, the 43-year-old claimed there was a romantic relationship between them, something which is not corroborated by the evidence gathered. The Greek Police do not identify a romantic motive for the crime, whilst other possible causes are being examined.
The victim was the owner of the property that the perpetrator rented together with his wife. The authorities are thoroughly investigating the history of their contacts, as well as any financial or other disputes that could have led to such extreme violent conduct.
The 43-year-old is expected to be brought before the judicial authorities, whilst an autopsy is expected to shed further light on the exact circumstances of the unfortunate woman's death.
