Alexandros Giotopoulos Returns to Prison Following Supreme Court Decision
The 82-year-old Alexandros Giotopoulos, considered the mastermind of the extremist organisation "November 17", is to return to prison after the Supreme Court annulled his release, according to police sources and the Athens News Agency.
Giotopoulos was arrested in 2002 when police dismantled the Marxist group that had carried out attacks over 27 consecutive years. In 2003 he was convicted along with other members of the organisation. Although he denied the charges, an appeals court in 2007 imposed on him 17 life sentences and an additional 25 years imprisonment.
He was released on 21 May from the high-security Korydallos prison after a judicial council approved a request he had submitted in 2025 citing health reasons.
However, the Supreme Court approved this week a prosecutor's decision to overturn the release. Giotopoulos appeared before a prosecutor on Tuesday and is expected to return to Korydallos later in the day.
