Greek Minister for Civil Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis stated that the arrested man admitted to having received training in Malaysia. The Greek politician emphasised that the suspect "was not acting alone", suggesting the existence of a network.
According to public television ERT, the man arrived in Greece in 2023 and was granted asylum that same year. He later travelled to Germany and then to Malaysia, where he is reported to have been trained at a Hamas camp before returning to Crete. On the island he worked as an electrician at a hotel until his arrest.
Various local media outlets report that the attack plans may have been aimed at an Israeli cruise ship with a scheduled arrival in Crete.
Police seized laboratory equipment and chemical products that could be used to manufacture a bomb from an apartment the suspect had rented in Athens.
The arrest resulted from cooperation between various intelligence services and information agencies.
