Three arrests have been made in connection with the murder of a 49-year-old man struck with a mattock in Apesokari, Heraklion. Among those arrested are a father and son, with the latter having previously attracted media attention due to his involvement in the Giakoumakis case.

Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the fatal injury of a 49-year-old man in the Apesokari area of Heraklion, Crete. The victim was attacked with a mattock on the morning of 1 March 2026 whilst travelling on a motorcycle in a rural area, between 11:22 and 11:30.
According to the case file, the 32-year-old son and a 59-year-old worker are alleged to be the direct perpetrators, whilst the 57-year-old father is accused of being an accomplice. Among those arrested is also the family's shepherd. The younger of the accused had attracted media attention almost a decade earlier, having been involved in the much-discussed case of Vangelis Giakoumakis.
The forensic examination concluded that death resulted from craniocerebral injuries caused by "a blow to the head from a sharp object". This finding significantly strengthens the version of criminal conduct, weakening the possibility of an accident or chance fall. Relatives and close friends of the victim had expressed from the outset the conviction that it was a premeditated act and not an unfortunate incident.
Televised footage broadcast on the programme "Truths with Xenia" shows the ill-fated man leaving his home around 11:22, as he was heading on his motorbike to buy coffee and food for a worker employed on a nearby farm.
Heraklion Police undertook the main investigation of the case, gathering and assessing all available evidence to determine whether criminal charges could be substantiated.
