Two correctional officers at Korydallos Prison were arrested in connection with the escape of a 47-year-old foreign national inmate who had been convicted on drug-related charges.

A 47-year-old foreign national inmate managed to escape from Korydallos Prison on Tuesday, 2 June, whilst carrying out bread delivery duties. The man had been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for offences related to narcotic substances.
According to an official announcement from the General Secretariat for Countering Crime, the escapee worked in the Central Material Storage Unit of the correctional facility. During his work, he found a way to leave the premises. Search operations to locate him began in the early morning hours.
The inmate's record included three regular furloughs he had received over the previous six months, which he had fully respected, always returning on the scheduled date. This fact had led to the assessment that he was suitable for the granting of furloughs by the competent Board.
The case took an unexpected turn when two correctional officers were brought in for questioning in connection with the escape. The authorities accuse them of facilitating the inmate's release. Files have been opened against them, whilst disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated.
Police investigations continue in order to locate the escapee and to fully investigate the circumstances of the escape.
