On the evening of Tuesday, 2 June, a passenger aircraft travelling from Manchester in England to Antalya in Turkey was forced to make an emergency stop at Thessaloniki's "Macedonia" airport. The cause was the uncontrolled behaviour of a man who was on the flight.
The passenger in question was 39 years old and a national of the United Kingdom, and had consumed a large quantity of alcohol. During the course of the aircraft's journey, he began to cause problems in the cabin, displaying aggression towards flight crew and other passengers.
The pilot, recognising the danger that lurked for the safety of the aircraft and those on board, decided to change course and head towards the nearest airport. Thus, the aircraft landed at "Macedonia", where police officers from the airport's Security Division were waiting.
Police officers restrained the British man and took him into custody. Charges were brought against the defendant for obstructing the safe operation of air transport, disobedience to the captain's orders, and causing a disturbance.
After the problematic passenger was removed, the aircraft continued its journey without incident to Antalya. The 39-year-old was referred to the District Prosecutor of Thessaloniki to provide a statement.
