Fraud against mother of well-known lawyer — €20,000 and jewellery lost
According to Newsbeast, the mother of lawyer Evita Varela fell victim to an organised fraud, losing €20,000 in cash and jewellery from her home.
The case began when the elderly woman was returning from the supermarket. Two people — a man and a woman — approached her under the pretext of returning a tax refund for her daughter, asking for €1,600 as a deposit.
Subsequently, as reported by Mega, the perpetrators followed the elderly woman to her home. There, the woman in the gang kept the victim occupied while the man searched the premises and removed the money and jewellery.
The details of the case show that the perpetrators had been watching the elderly woman for more than a week before the attack. Speaking to SKAI on the morning of Wednesday, 8 July, Evita Varela stated that the fraudsters knew both her name and her mother's name, as well as other personal details. "They knew her name, mine and other important details," she said.
