The woman who was accused of abandoning a newborn in a rubbish bin was found unconscious in her cell just hours before her case was due to be heard in court.

A 34-year-old woman, who faced charges of abandoning her newborn child in a rubbish bin, died in the cell where she was being held at the Police Directorate of Heraklion.
The incident was discovered on the morning of Sunday. Correctional staff noticed that the detainee had not woken up. When they approached to check her condition, they found that she was unresponsive. Her death is being treated as sudden, whilst a forensic examination is expected to shed light on the exact causes.
The 34-year-old had been transferred to the Heraklion detention facility on Saturday, 20 June. Her scheduled appearance before the Mixed Jury Court was set for the following Tuesday.
The case had caused considerable emotional reaction in May 2025. At that time, the woman had secretly given birth to her baby at home. Rather than seek help, she had placed the infant in a rubbish bin. Fortunately, an EKAB ambulance officer who had been called to the house to deal with complications following childbirth discovered the baby and revived it.
