Woman arrested in Évora for assaulting minor children

A 52-year-old mother was arrested in Évora district, accused of physically and psychologically assaulting her two minor children, aged 17 and 5. The woman was remanded in custody following her initial court hearing on Friday.

Authorities became aware of the case at the end of June. The 17-year-old teenager was hospitalised when the facts came to light, having sustained injuries inflicted by his own mother. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the mistreatment of the older son is believed to have begun in 2016, when he was eight years old.

The defendant allegedly also threatened to kill the children, particularly the teenager. The criminal investigation judge ordered the suspension of the detainee's parental rights.

The victims were removed from the family home and placed in care facilities, in an operation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People, and the Family Court of Évora.

A third child, aged 15, was also placed in institutional care as a precaution, although there is no evidence that he was subjected to assault.

The suspect already had a criminal record for drug trafficking and was serving a four-year and four-month sentence, suspended pending proof. The investigation continues to be handled by Évora's Public Prosecutor's Office for Criminal Investigation, with collaboration from the Police Service.
