Young man stabs mother's boyfriend in Matosinhos and remanded in custody

Google News PT — Crime reports that a 20-year-old man, identified as Ivan, was remanded in custody after killing Juan Mandim, aged 50, his mother's boyfriend, with a knife. The custody measure was announced on Monday afternoon, following the first judicial hearing at Matosinhos court.
Ivan arrived at the court shortly before 2 p.m., accompanied by inspectors from the Polícia Judiciária. About three hours later, he left in the same vehicle heading to Custóias prison, where he will await trial.
According to the defence, the decision was based on flight risk, risk to the investigation and the social alarm generated by the crime.
According to Ivan's girlfriend, the homicide occurred when the young man went home to fetch a jacket. The two argued, began to quarrel and exchanged blows. During the confrontation, Ivan picked up a knife and stabbed Mandim in the chest and belly. Before the authorities, the young man stated he had been subjected to a chokehold and acted to protect himself and his mother.
The argument apparently stemmed from an exchange of messages in which the victim impersonated the young man's mother.
After the crime, Ivan left the residence and called his girlfriend to report what had happened, asking her to meet him. The two disposed of the weapon and travelled by bus to Aliados, in Porto. About three hours later, according to his girlfriend, the couple decided that Ivan should turn himself in to the authorities.
The young man was arrested by the Polícia Judiciária and indicated to the inspectors the location where the weapon was found, reiterating that he acted in self-defence for himself and his mother. His girlfriend states she has no doubt that the crime was not premeditated and that Ivan grabbed the first thing that came to hand.
Juan Mandim had been dating Ivan's mother for more than a year. The relationship was described by everyone as toxic and marked by various conflicts. Having been present at the residence at the time of the crime, the mother is considered a key witness in the investigation.
