Prosecutor Radu Bucurică suspended by CSM following preventive arrest over gun incident
The prosecutor from Caraș-Severin, involved in an armed incident in Hunedoara, was detained on Thursday at Snagov and suspended from office by the CSM.
Prosecutor Bucurică suspended by CSM after HCCJ ordered preventive arrest
The Prosecutor's Section of the Superior Council of the Magistracy unanimously decided to suspend prosecutor Radu George Bucurică from the Office of the Prosecutor attached to the Court of Caraș-Severin, effective from 28 August 2026. The decision followed the High Court of Cassation and Justice issuing a preventive arrest warrant for 30 days in the magistrate's name, according to Google News RO — Crime (ro).
"The Prosecutor's Section of the Superior Council of the Magistracy has decided the suspension from the position of prosecutor of BUCURICĂ RADU GEORGE, from the Office of the Prosecutor attached to the Court of Caraș-Severin, effective from 28.08.2026, as a result of the measure of preventive arrest, pursuant to Law no. 303/2022 on the status of judges and prosecutors, with subsequent amendments and additions", the CSM decision states.
Apprehended shopping in a supermarket in Snagov
Bucurică had been placed under wanted status after the Court of Appeal Alba Iulia released him following a case opened in August. IPJ Ilfov announced it was carrying out "activities for identifying and locating the person in question, as well as for executing the preventive arrest warrant".
On Thursday evening, the prosecutor was located and apprehended in the car park of a supermarket in Snagov commune, Ilfov county, where he had been shopping, according to judicial sources. He was initially taken to Snagov Police headquarters, and subsequently transported to the Central Detention Facility.
The incident of 8 August: gun, flight and special forces
The incident that triggered the criminal case took place on 8 August in a nightclub in Hunedoara county. A police inspector present at the scene alerted units after a witness reported that Bucurică was displaying "suspicious behaviour", staring fixedly at other clients and wearing an object resembling a gun beneath his jacket.
The magistrate allegedly caused a disturbance on the premises' terrace, after which he fled. According to investigators, he fired at police officers with a gun before being apprehended. Taken to hospital for medical investigations, he allegedly attempted to escape and was stopped by special intervention forces officers.
Radu George Bucurică was detained for 24 hours, and the CSM issued its approval for his referral before the judges of the Court of Appeal Alba Iulia. These judges decided nevertheless to release him, citing a recording that appeared to show that it was not Bucurică who fired at law enforcement, even though he was in possession of a firearm without authorisation.
HCCJ upheld prosecutors' appeal
The prosecutors appealed the Court of Appeal Alba Iulia's decision to the High Court of Cassation and Justice. The judges at the Supreme Court upheld the appeal and established that Bucurică must be placed under preventive arrest.
On 27 August, the HCCJ issued the preventive arrest warrant for 30 days, "for the commission of offences of breaching the firearms and ammunition regime, disturbing public order and peace, and two offences of contempt", according to an announcement published on the Romanian Police website.
Firearm licence revoked in July
Caraș-Severin Police — the Weapons, Explosives and Dangerous Substances Service had revoked Bucurică's firearm licence on 27 July, before the incident in Hunedoara occurred.
