Remand in custody following collision during police pursuit on Timișorii Street in Lugoj

Lugoj District Court has ordered the remand in custody for 30 days of the man involved in the collision that occurred in the night of Saturday to Sunday on Timișorii Street in the locality, according to Google News RO — Crime (ro). The measure was requested by the Prosecutor's Office attached to Lugoj District Court and was admitted by the court, which rejected less restrictive alternatives, such as house arrest or judicial control.

The man was identified as Petriș-Viorel Iarinca. According to the ruling, he will remain in custody for the period 29 August – 27 September 2026 inclusive. The decision may be contested within 48 hours of the ruling.

Iarinca is being investigated for culpable bodily injury, theft for purposes of use and driving a vehicle without a driving licence. The collision occurred after the man failed to stop at a police checkpoint on Timișorii Street. Police officers began pursuing the vehicle, and during the pursuit the car driven by Iarinca entered the opposite lane and collided with a vehicle that was travelling in compliance with traffic regulations.

Four people required medical care following the impact. Police officers immobilised the driver at the scene, and subsequent checks confirmed that he did not hold a driving licence.

Iarinca's criminal file also includes a previous conviction. In May 2020, Lugoj District Court sentenced him in the first instance to five years and six months in prison for armed robbery. According to information published at that time, the man had allegedly threatened a Lugoj resident near the Concrete Bridge in Lugoj with a knife and had taken his wallet, which contained 700 lei and the victim's personal documents.

The investigation into the collision from a few days ago is ongoing, with enquiries continuing to establish all the circumstances in which the incident occurred, according to lugojinfo.ro.
