A 39-year-old man from La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara, died on Saturday evening after being shot during an altercation with a security officer at a supermarket along the Beterverwagting Railway Embankment, newsroom.gy reports.
The deceased has been identified as Kevon Benjamin, who was struck in the abdomen at approximately 5:45 p.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that Benjamin and a 46-year-old security officer were involved in a dispute when a firearm was allegedly discharged, hitting Benjamin.
He was transported to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he received emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police subsequently took the security officer into custody. A 9mm Beretta firearm and a magazine containing 16 matching rounds of ammunition were recovered at the scene; both were lodged as evidence while investigations continue.
Benjamin's body was transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Police confirmed the security officer remains in custody as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
