Armed woman boards Indianapolis school bus with 37 children after road rage incident

A 19-year-old Indianapolis woman has been charged with forcing her way onto a moving school bus with a loaded handgun while 37 children were on board, according to Marion County court records reviewed by Law & Crime.

Jamiya Sutton faces charges of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement where a vehicle is used, pointing a firearm at another, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.

The incident took place on Sept. 16, when Sutton was driving a Kia K4 on the east side of Indianapolis. A school bus was traveling the same route at the time. Sutton later told police that the bus pulled out in front of her near the intersection of East 36th Street and North Dequincy Street, causing her to strike a construction sign, local Fox affiliate WXIN reported.

Sutton followed the bus in anger. When the driver did not stop, she drove around the vehicle and parked her car to block its path.

The bus driver told authorities she had not noticed Sutton until the Kia cut in front of the bus and brought it to a halt. Sutton then allegedly stepped out of the vehicle holding a black handgun, waving it and shouting at the driver to get off the bus.

When the driver refused, Sutton reportedly "forced the door open and came onto the bus with the handgun." She continued waving the weapon and yelling before returning to her car.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were initially dispatched to the area following a report of a crash. On arrival, they found the Kia blocking the road and determined the two vehicles had not actually made contact — the situation was unrelated to a collision.

When officers questioned Sutton about threatening the bus driver, she acknowledged she was armed but stated she "did not do anything with it."

Sutton had been playing loud music in the car. While an officer reached in to turn it down, a black handgun was found under the driver's seat. The weapon was identified as a Glock 17 loaded with a magazine containing 21 live rounds.

The firearm was seized and Sutton was arrested. Her initial court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
