Guilty verdict in Baldwin County quadruple homicide

A jury in Baldwin County, Alabama, has convicted Jared Smith-Bracy of capital murder in connection with the deaths of four people at a family home in Daphne in February 2023, fox10tv.com reports.

Smith-Bracy killed his brother, his grandparents, and a family friend at his grandparents' residence. According to prosecutors, he told Daphne police shortly after the shootings that he had shot the victims and struck them with a pickax. Forensic evidence showed the pickax was used on the four victims a total of 38 times.

The trial got underway last week. The defence argued that Smith-Bracy had been suffering from undiagnosed and untreated schizophrenia at the time of the crimes, calling into question his mental capacity to understand his actions.

The jury found him guilty of capital murder of two or more persons. A sentencing date has not yet been set. Prosecutors removed the death penalty as an option, meaning Smith-Bracy now faces life in prison.
