Oregon Woman Charged with Murder After Running Over Lottery-Winner Boyfriend in Portland

Portland Woman Accused of Killing Boyfriend Who Shared Lottery Prize She Then Stole

A 55-year-old Oregon woman faces second-degree murder charges after allegedly running over her boyfriend with her car following a dispute over stolen lottery money, Law & Crime reports.

Mary Ann McKinzy was extradited to Multnomah County on Sept. 18 after U.S. Marshals arrested her in Bakersfield, California. She is charged with second-degree murder, assault, and negligent homicide in the death of 75-year-old James S. Miller.

According to court documents cited by The Oregonian, McKinzy and Miller were in a relationship when Miller won $3,200 playing the lottery. He gave McKinzy $1,700 of the prize. She then allegedly stole an additional $800 from him — prompting Miller to gather friends and go looking for her to recover the money.

On Nov. 28, 2025, a friend drove Miller to McKinzy's apartment complex in Portland, where the two men located her sitting in her car in the parking lot. The friend told police he did not know what Miller intended to do. He later recounted hearing Miller tell McKinzy to "open the door or I'm going to bust the window open."

Miller instructed his friend to use his car to block McKinzy's vehicle so she could not leave. McKinzy allegedly responded by reversing into the friend's car. When the friend stepped out to check the damage, he witnessed Miller throw a knife at McKinzy's vehicle. Surveillance footage, according to court documents, captured Miller stabbing her tires with a knife.

McKinzy then allegedly shifted into reverse and backed over Miller. When the friend told her to move her car off him, she reportedly said Miller was "trying to kill" her — then drove away.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially investigated his death as a possible stabbing; they later determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

By the time a warrant was issued for McKinzy's arrest, she had already left Oregon. Her car was found at a tire shop shortly after Miller's death. Hubcaps recovered from the vehicle matched one found at the scene of the incident, and McKinzy had left many of her belongings in the car before fleeing.

The U.S. Marshals Service located McKinzy in Bakersfield on Aug. 5. She is currently held at the Multnomah County Detention Center, with her next court appearance scheduled for Sept. 29.
