Texas Mother Charged After Stabbing Son Mid-Video Game Session, Son Screamed "She's Trying to Kill Me"

A 44-year-old Texas mother entered her teenage son's room while he played video games and "just came in and started stabbing" him with a small silver knife, prosecutors said in court Tuesday, according to Law & Crime. A witness reportedly heard the 14-year-old scream "she's trying to kill me" as the attack unfolded on Sept. 2 at the family's home in West El Paso.

Janie King appeared before a judge Tuesday following her arrest on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident triggered an hourslong SWAT standoff at the residence before authorities were able to enter the property.

Prosecutors, citing local NBC affiliate KTSM, said King also brought a baseball bat into the teen's room but dropped it before turning to the knife. A witness described in an arrest affidavit finding King "cutting" the boy open with the blade. That witness told police they called 911 after helping the victim to a separate bedroom and locking the door.

The teen sustained multiple stab wounds and was hospitalized. He survived the attack.

Assistant District Attorney Holly Rodriguez urged the court to set conditions ensuring King would not return to the home. "I would ask that whatever bond you give, that we make sure she's not in the home and not near the children," Rodriguez told the judge. King was ordered held on a $60,000 bond and prohibited from any contact with her son.

Rodriguez told the court that King homeschools two of her children — the 14-year-old who was stabbed and a 12-year-old — and that both children have special needs. The children's father works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, five days a week and is not present at the home during that time.

Authorities gained entry to the family's home by using a drill to open the garage door, KTSM reports. The presiding judge said Tuesday he intends to order a psychiatric evaluation for King.
