CBI Extradites Sexual Assault Accused from UAE Using Red Corner Notice
The Central Bureau of Investigation has extradited a Red Notice subject from the United Arab Emirates to India, rediff.com reports, following a sexual assault case filed by the Delhi Police involving a 20-year-old victim.
Sajeer Palli Mooppam was located in the UAE after the CBI published a Red Corner Notice at Delhi Police's request. UAE authorities arrested him and handed him over to a Delhi Police escort team, which arrived back in New Delhi on Wednesday.
"The subject was wanted in connection with a sexual assault case registered by the Delhi Police," a CBI spokesperson said. "Investigation revealed that the accused, along with an accomplice, forcibly administered an intoxicating substance to a 20-year-old woman, rendering her incapacitated."
The spokesperson said Mooppam allegedly exploited the victim's condition, transported her to a hotel and checked in using third-party identity credentials to avoid detection. "He subjected the victim to non-consensual sexual assault, which was corroborated by subsequent medical and forensic reports," she added. A chargesheet has already been filed before the competent court.
The extradition followed formal legal procedures between the two countries. The UAE authorities arrested Mooppam at the CBI's request, and the Delhi Police escort team travelled to the UAE to receive him before returning to New Delhi on Wednesday.
The CBI noted that more than 278 wanted criminals have been brought back to India since 2019 through coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies.
