Cannabis scent in traffic triggers arrest and guilty plea in Bridgetown court

A routine traffic detail on Fairchild Street ended in a criminal conviction after officers smelled cannabis coming from a passing vehicle. Barbados Today reports that Ebrahim Mohamed Adam, a 23-year-old entrepreneur from Lakes Folly, subsequently appeared before the District 'A' Traffic Court and pleaded guilty to three charges connected to 21 grammes of marijuana found in his car.

Adam admitted to possessing cannabis, holding a trafficable quantity, and intending to supply the drug — all in relation to an incident on September 20. The seized cannabis carried an estimated street value of $105.55.

How the arrest unfolded

Police were managing slow-moving traffic at the junction of Fairchild, Bridge and Probyn Streets when they detected a strong smell of cannabis from a vehicle in the queue. Officers directed the driver to pull over, and Adam complied.

When asked directly whether he had any drugs on him, Adam acknowledged that he did. He then retrieved a bag containing the marijuana from the vehicle's centre console and handed it over.

Sentencing

Magistrate Jared Richards ordered Adam to keep the peace for one month in connection with the possession charge, cautioning him that any breach would result in an immediate fine of $500 or ten days in prison. On the remaining two charges — the trafficable quantity and intent to supply — Adam was reprimanded and discharged.
