Man attacks sister with cutlass in Barbados domestic dispute, case adjourned

A 33-year-old man from Tudor Land, Back Ivy, has pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding his sister with a cutlass, Barbados Today reports. The No. 1 District 'A' Magistrates Court will hear from the complainant next month.

Shane McDonald Carter admitted to wounding Katrina Carter on August 17. Prosecutor Sergeant Victoria Leacock told the court that Carter, his sister, and his girlfriend all share the same home.

The incident began when the complainant returned from work and was about to do laundry, at which point the accused's girlfriend placed her own clothes in the washing machine. An argument broke out between the two women. Carter then arrived home, slapped his sister, and produced a cutlass from his waistband. He swung the blade at her, and she raised her left hand to defend herself.

Katrina Carter subsequently sought treatment from a private doctor for a cut to her thumb and palm, as well as a soft tissue injury to her face. She also reported the incident to police.

Carter admitted to the offence and told officers he had anger issues and was sorry for what he had done.

Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick released Carter on $2,500 bail with surety, and issued a warning that he must stay away from his sister. The matter was adjourned to September 9, when the complainant is expected to appear before the court.
