A 39-year-old man from East Point, St Philip, has been ordered to pay $1,500 in fines after he interfered with court marshals executing an ejectment order at a St Michael residence, Barbados Today reports.

Darren Manningham Burgess appeared before Magistrate Manila Renee at District 'A' Magistrates' Court No. 2 and pleaded guilty to two counts of obstructing marshals Cheryl-Ann Francis and Cregg Mayers in the performance of their functions on August 27.

Prosecutor Sergeant Kenmore Phillips told the court that the two marshals were at the property carrying out a court-issued ejectment order when Burgess arrived on the scene. He first spoke to the individual against whom the order had been issued, then forced his way inside and confronted the marshals — shouting at them and preventing them from completing their duties.

Magistrate Renee, noting that several of Burgess' 15 previous convictions were of a similar character, addressed him directly from the bench: "You have a history of assaulting police officers and authority figures. You need to learn to behave yourself."

She imposed a fine of $750 on each charge. Burgess was given one month to settle the total amount or face two months in prison. The sentences are to run concurrently.
