Guilty plea in Welches Beach murder: sentencing date set for Clarke
Barbados Today reports that sentencing submissions for Shaniqua Kadeesha Cecilia Clarke, who pleaded guilty to murdering her boyfriend Devitus Chase, will be heard at the No. 4 Supreme Court on October 23.
Clarke, 31, of Helstone Lane, Gall Hill, Christ Church, entered her guilty plea earlier this year. She admitted to murdering Chase between October 18 and 21, 2022.
When the matter was called on Thursday, the court was informed that all necessary reports had been completed. Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell adjourned proceedings to October 23 to receive submissions from acting Senior State Counsel Paul Prescod and defence attorney Sade Harris.
Clarke and Chase had been in a relationship since 2018. They separated briefly in 2022 before reuniting. During that period, Clarke became involved with another man and disclosed details about Chase to him, without telling Chase about the other relationship.
Chase subsequently told Clarke he had met someone else and advised her to move on with her life. According to the court record, this angered her.
Clarke told police she invited Chase to Welches Beach on the night in question. She had arranged for the other man to accompany her and conceal himself in the bushes while she spoke with Chase.
Clarke said that as she and Chase sat on the sand, the other man emerged and began striking Chase in the head with a stick. She said she then panicked and stabbed Chase with a knife he had been carrying.
