Supreme Court orders arrest of Eduardo Bolsonaro ahead of presidential runoff

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has issued an arrest warrant for Eduardo Bolsonaro, the brother of presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, aljazeera.com reports. The move comes weeks before the October 25 runoff election between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, who is considered the favourite.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes signed the warrant on Thursday, ordering Eduardo Bolsonaro to begin serving a four-year sentence immediately. In June, the Supreme Court had convicted him on charges of lobbying the United States government to interfere in the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.

"The defendant cannot benefit from his own wrongdoing by fleeing the national territory to an unknown location for the purpose of thwarting the application of criminal law," de Moraes said in his ruling.

De Moraes also cancelled Eduardo Bolsonaro's Brazilian passport and instructed federal police to arrest him should he return to Brazil.

The 42-year-old former lawmaker has lived in Texas since March 2025, when he announced he would relocate to the United States full time to focus on securing his father's release. That decision cost him his seat in the Brazilian National Congress and his position as a federal police investigator. He holds a US green card.

Eduardo Bolsonaro had served as a key intermediary between his brother Flávio and the Trump administration, accompanying him to a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House in May.

He was convicted specifically of lobbying to impose sanctions on members of the Brazilian government and to push for higher tariffs on Brazilian exports during Jair Bolsonaro's trial. De Moraes chaired the investigation that led to Jair Bolsonaro being sentenced in September 2025 to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup.

The Bolsonaro family regards de Moraes as a political opponent. Both sides of Brazil's deeply polarised political landscape have long accused each other of corruption and abuse of legal processes, with tensions rising sharply in the lead-up to the October runoff.
