Kingston Police are warning residents of a scam involving individuals posing as food delivery drivers and customers to obtain bank cards and PINs, ctvnews.ca reports.

Several incidents have been reported in which a person approaches a member of the public, claiming to be a customer unable to pay for a food delivery. The fraudster then asks the victim to pay on their behalf, promising cash in return.

When the victim inserts their bank card into a payment terminal, the card is swapped for another, and the PIN is recorded. The stolen card is subsequently used to make cash withdrawals, deposit bad cheques, and complete purchases.

"Police are reminding residents that you should never give your bank card or PIN to another person or enter your PIN into a payment terminal when you are unsure who is operating the transaction," Kingston Police said in a news release.

Police have outlined key warning signs the public should watch for. "If someone asks you to pay for their food or another purchase using your debit or credit card in exchange for cash, consider declining the request," officers said. "A legitimate delivery driver should not require you to provide your banking information or PIN to facilitate another person's purchase."

Anyone who believes their bank card may have been compromised is urged to contact Kingston Police.
