A shooting in a Jewish neighborhood in western Montreal left three people dead, according to Canadian police. The incident began shortly before 11:35 a.m. local time.

Among the deceased are a police officer, a civilian, and the man believed to have opened fire. Another officer was wounded during the operation. The Montreal police issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the death of their colleague in the line of duty.

A large police force was deployed to the area, which is home to numerous Jewish shops and restaurants. Residents were instructed to remain indoors, while the nearby highway was closed to traffic. Social media images show a suspect wearing military-style clothing lying on the ground.

Quebec's Minister of Public Security, Jean Lafrenière, told Radio-Canada that authorities currently do not know the motive behind the attack. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a major Canadian civic organization, stated it is closely monitoring the situation.
