RCMP shoots man during standoff at rural Salmo property on Ski Hill Road

A man was seriously injured after an RCMP officer opened fire during a standoff in Salmo, B.C. on Sept. 3. The Independent Investigations Office is now probing the incident.

A man was seriously injured after an RCMP officer discharged their firearm during a standoff at a rural property in Salmo, in British Columbia's West Kootenay region, Vancouver Sun Crime reports.

According to Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, spokesperson for B.C. RCMP, the southeast district's emergency response team and officers from Creston RCMP attended a property on Ski Hill Road on Sept. 3 to execute a search warrant.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man who, after being advised he was under arrest, fled into a travel trailer on the property. Clark said police spent the better part of the morning attempting to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.

"Over the course of the morning, several de-escalation measures were employed in an effort to have the individual exit," Clark said. "However, those efforts were unsuccessful."

At some point during the standoff, an officer observed the man appearing at the entrance of the trailer while seemingly holding a weapon. The officer then discharged their firearm. The man retreated back inside the trailer before emerging and surrendering to police approximately an hour later, without further incident.

Clark said the man received immediate medical attention from officers on scene before being transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. He was subsequently airlifted by air ambulance to a second hospital for further treatment.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. — the civilian oversight body that examines all officer-involved shootings in the province — has launched an investigation into the incident and is calling on anyone with video footage of the shooting to come forward.
