A 22-year-old Italian woman was killed and five others wounded when at least one gunman opened fire at an overnight rave in Aarau, Switzerland, Google News IE — Crime (en) reports, citing local police who announced the incident on Sunday.
Italy's Foreign Ministry confirmed the victim's nationality in an official statement.
The five injured, aged between 24 and 27, sustained varying degrees of injury, with some in a serious condition, according to cantonal police.
The shots were fired before 3:00 a.m. local time during the annual Aarauer Rave, held at the Schachen race course where a techno party was under way, Swiss newspaper Blick reported, quoting police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold.
Authorities launched a manhunt for the gunman or gunmen immediately after the shooting. Police spokesman Bernhard Graser told reporters the situation remained unclear. "For the moment, we have no reliable information regarding the perpetrators. We do not know whether it is a single person or several, nor whether they fled in a vehicle or on foot," he said.
Graser added that while some indications suggested the suspect or suspects may have left the area, a significant police presence remained deployed in the region. "So that we can arrest them if they are still there," he said.
Officers asked the public to stay away from the area and called on anyone with videos or images of the incident to come forward.
Police in Freiburg, in neighbouring Germany, were also participating in the manhunt, the German news agency dpa reported.
The shooting is a rare occurrence in Switzerland, where gun ownership is relatively widespread but gun violence at public events remains uncommon. Aarau, a city of approximately 22,300 residents, lies around 40 kilometres west of Zürich.
