A high-ranking official in Abu Dhabi told Israeli outlet ynet reporter Smadar Perri that second pilot Hammam al-Hammami could face execution once the United Arab Emirates concludes its investigation. He is accused of attempting to carry out an attack on Flydubai flight FZ 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The unnamed source, as reported by MTI, insisted the penalty must be the harshest possible even though no passengers were killed or injured. The official added that such severity would serve as a deterrent and signal to anyone who supplied the "criminal" with materials and ideology that there would be no leniency or pardon.

Omani authorities had previously barred the 29-year-old from flying because of extremist views. Al-Hammami is currently in UAE custody, cooperating with investigators and has admitted he intended to crash the aircraft.
