Last member of gang that ambushed app-based ride drivers arrested in Buenos Aires

Agents of the Federal Investigation Department (DFI) of the Argentine Federal Police have captured the last fugitive member of a criminal organisation that operated against app-based transport drivers in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the surrounding area, according to cadena3.com.

The arrested man, 27 years old with a record for homicide, was arrested in Virrey del Pino, in the municipality of La Matanza. He was transferred to a judicial facility to make a statement of defence and faces charges of criminal association and armed robbery.

The authorities attribute to him participation in the murder of a "Didi" app driver, which occurred on 24 February of this year. Despite this charge, the suspect had managed to evade justice for months.

A modus operandi based on deception

The gang used the transport platforms themselves as a tool to set up ambushes: they would request rides by simulating medical emergencies, and once in contact with the driver, they would act with firearms and physical violence. Victims were robbed of money, mobile phones, documents and personal belongings.

On occasions, members of the group would be accompanied by women or minors in order to avoid raising suspicion at the time of the attack.

Fifteen offences charged, including one homicide

The organisation is attributed with at least 15 offences committed in the City of Buenos Aires and municipalities in the surrounding area, in a pattern of high violence. Among these incidents is the murder of the "Didi" driver.

Through various previous operations, security forces had arrested five members of the group. The capture in La Matanza closes the cycle of arrests with the detention of the sole member who remained at large.
