A man apprehended during the early hours of Saturday died hours later while in custody at Police Station 2 in San Juan, according to tiempodesanjuan.com.
According to qualified sources cited by the outlet, the man was detained at approximately 5:30 by civilians who intervened following the theft of a mobile phone from a minor. He was subsequently transferred to the police station.
Already at the police station, the detainee—who appeared to have been under the influence of some substance—suffered an initial medical emergency. An ambulance was requested and, after receiving medical assistance, he managed to stabilise.
However, at around 8:30, when the medical examiner arrived to carry out the routine examination, the man was found to be in a medical emergency again. Assistance was requested once more, but by the time the ambulance arrived at the location the man had already died.
Personnel from the Special Crimes Prosecution Unit attended Police Station 2 to carry out the corresponding procedures and determine what occurred during the hours the man remained in custody.
One of the hypotheses being considered is that death could have occurred from natural causes, although the investigation will be responsible for establishing the cause and precise circumstances of the death.
The identity of the deceased has not been officially confirmed at this time.
