Preventive custody for two perpetrators of gender-based violence in Buenos Aires

According to perfil.com, the East Flagrancy Unit of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the City of Buenos Aires secured preventive custody for a man accused of threatening his ex-partner, despite having an active restraining order and contact prohibition against him.

The accused, who already had a prior conviction for assault in the context of gender-based violence, was arrested in flagrante delicto whilst loitering near the residence where the victim lives with her stepfather. Before arriving at the location, he had sent intimidatory messages to both the woman and the stepfather. The electronic monitoring centre of the City Police detected the man's proximity and alerted the authorities.

At the request of auxiliary prosecutor Mariano Petroselli, Criminal Court, Misdemeanour and Minor Offences Court No. 31, presided over by Judge Susana Parada, granted preventive custody for the offences of coercive threats in the context of gender-based violence and disobedience to authority.

In a second case, the North Flagrancy Unit of the same Public Prosecutor's Office also obtained preventive custody for another man, accused of threatening his ex-partner with a knife in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Chacarita.

Personnel from the City Police arrested the perpetrator in a public place after he attempted to attack the woman. During the hearing to inform the accused of the facts at the Prosecutor's Office headquarters, the accused was hostile and aggressive, and even threatened the female officials present at the proceeding.

Auxiliary prosecutor Julián Pistone cited the risk of flight, the danger of obstructing the investigation, and the man's criminal record for robbery and theft in requesting the measure. The head judge of Criminal Court, Misdemeanour and Minor Offences Court No. 15, Judge Karina Andrade, granted preventive custody for aggravated threats through the use of weapons in the context of gender-based violence, in real concurrence with simple threats and assault on authority, to remain in effect throughout the proceedings.
