Two minors dead in San Juan in one week: stray bullet and knife at party
Within seven days, two teenagers died violently in Chimbas and Pocito, San Juan. Both cases are being investigated by the Juvenile Justice system.
Two violent deaths in one week shake San Juan
According to 0264noticias.com.ar, two teenagers died in violent circumstances in Greater San Juan with just seven days between the incidents. The episodes occurred in the departments of Chimbas and Pocito, and in both cases the Juvenile Justice system is leading the investigations.
Chimbas, 14 September: gunshot to the head and girlfriend charged
The first incident took place on Monday 14 September near 25 de Mayo Street and Proyectada Street, in Villa 1° de Mayo, Chimbas. Gonzalo Martín Quinteros Olmos, 19 years old, received a gunshot to the head and died at the scene.
In the initial hours, the investigation pointed to unknown third parties. However, the autopsy changed the course of the case: the forensic report determined that the projectile entered through the left maxilla and exited through the right side of the neck. The trajectory and distance of the shot did not match the initial account given about what had occurred inside the dwelling.
Based on that result, investigators re-interviewed those who were present at the residence. The inquiry then focused on a 16-year-old teenager, Quinteros's girlfriend, who was present at the moment of the shooting. She was detained and charged with aggravated homicide through the use of a firearm before juvenile court judge Jorge Toro.
The young woman, represented by lawyer Filomena Noriega, refrained from testifying during the charging hearing on the advice of her defence. She remains in a facility for adolescents whilst the legal proceedings advance.
Pocito, early morning of 21 September: fight at the end of a party and knife stabbed in the chest
The second episode occurred in the early morning of Monday 21 September, in the area known as "Quinta Don Pedro", near Alfonso XIII Street and 14th Street, in Pocito. At the end of a private party, a brawl between minors left two teenagers injured by a bladed weapon.
One of those affected was identified as Uriel Alejandro Ríos Echegaray, 17 years old, who sustained injuries to the thorax. His twin brother, also 17 years old, was injured in the thorax and in the left upper limb. Both were first taken to Pocito Hospital and then transferred to Rawson Hospital.
At 6:45 am, Rawson Hospital confirmed the admission of the two teenagers. At 8:05 am, a further report indicated that Uriel had died as a result of his injuries. Upon arrival at the health centre, the young man still had the bladed weapon embedded in his chest; the item was subsequently seized by police personnel.
According to the initial proceedings, all those involved in the brawl were minors. The investigation seeks to establish how the fight started, who participated, and who was responsible for the assault that resulted in Uriel's death.

Over the course of seven days, San Juan accumulated two investigations into violent deaths in which teenagers figure as the principal protagonists: in Chimbas, a 16-year-old young woman is charged with the death of a 19-year-old man; in Pocito, a 17-year-old teenager died following a fight in which minors also participated. Both cases remain under judicial investigation.
