The legal situation of Carlos Gonzalo Riveros, from Salta, accused of killing his wife last weekend in San Juan, worsened on Wednesday during the imputations hearing, after the results of the autopsy performed on Camila Vecchiarello confirmed that the young woman was pregnant at the time of her death. At the hearing, Riveros, originally from Tartagal, denied being the perpetrator of the femicide. He told the judge that it was his own wife who injured herself because she did not want him to return to Salta.
The forensic reports, however, completely ruled out that version. According to the expert assessments, Vecchiarello's death was caused by hypovolaemic shock, a consequence of multiple incised wounds from a bladed weapon to the neck that severed the jugular vein and thyroid cartilage whilst the victim was still alive. The body also bore defensive injuries to the hands and arms, consistent with an attempt to stop the attack.
The biochemical analyses presented during the hearing confirmed, through Beta Subunit testing, that Vecchiarello—a gendarmerie aspirant—was pregnant at the time of the crime. Toxicological studies ruled out the presence of drugs of abuse in the victim.
The Public Prosecutor formally accused Riveros of homicide doubly aggravated by the marital relationship and by the presence of gender-based violence, a classification that falls under the category of femicide and which carries a sentence of life imprisonment.
During the same hearing, a message that the accused sent to his ex-partner before being apprehended was also revealed. "I will be looking after you from heaven... this time I couldn't do it, woman, depression beat me, everything beat me," Riveros wrote. In another part of the message, he added: "I'm saying goodbye to you, you really were and will be the woman I always loved. Take care of yourself and may you fulfil all your goals". The text concluded with a message directed to his family: "Tell my family that I love them with all my soul, I cannot say goodbye to them because what I am about to do breaks my heart. Please tell them that I love all of my family so much".
