Arrested after setting fire to his sister's home on Alem Street

A 30-year-old man was detained on Tuesday afternoon in Rawson, San Juan department, accused of intentionally setting fire to the home where his 20-year-old sister lives with her children. This was reported by sanjuan8.com based on initial proceedings incorporated into the investigation.

The fire was recorded at around 17:40 on Alem Street No. 528 West, between Jáchal and Manuel Lemos. The column of smoke generated forced temporary closure of traffic so that the Fire Department could work at the site.

According to the victim's account, at the time of the incident she was about to leave the home when she saw her brother at the back of the property. The man allegedly placed a padlock on the entrance gate. Shortly after, smoke began to emerge from that area. When asked by his sister what he had done, he allegedly responded "just because" and told her to call the Fire Department.

During the operation, another sister of the accused facilitated access to an adjacent property for the emergency personnel. In the rear yard of that home, police found the man lying on the ground with several lacerations to his left forearm. Next to him was a butcher's knife with a white handle and a blade approximately 36 centimetres long, which he allegedly used to inflict the injuries on himself.

Personnel from Service 107 provided initial treatment to his wounds. He was then transported under custody to a police station.

At the scene, experts from the Criminal Investigation Division also intervened, conducting visual inspection and the corresponding sketches.

By order of the Public Prosecutor's office, the case was initially classified as alleged malicious property damage. The accused was placed in the holding cells of the 24th Police Station, awaiting transfer to the CAVIG Specialised Investigation Unit, where his procedural situation will be determined.
