Man detained in Rawson after intentional fire and self-inflicted blade injuries

A 30-year-old man was placed in custody at the 24th Police Station on Tuesday afternoon in Rawson following a fire at his sister's home on Alem Street, between Jáchal and Manuel Lemos, according to tiempodesanjuan.com.

The accused man's sister, a 20-year-old woman, was preparing to leave the house to attend to schoolwork when she reportedly observed the man placing a padlock on the entrance gate. Shortly afterwards, a significant amount of smoke began coming from the rear of the property.

When asked why he had started the fire, the man responded "just because". Before leaving, he also reportedly told the young woman to call the fire brigade, according to the initial case proceedings.

The incident required intervention by police officers and firefighters, and the smoke forced a temporary interruption of traffic in the area to allow the emergency services to work.

While the emergency was being attended to, another sister of the accused allowed officers to enter an adjacent property. In the rear yard they found the man lying on the ground with several cut wounds on his left forearm. A short distance away was a butcher-type knife with a white handle and a 36-centimetre blade, which reportedly had been used to inflict the injuries.

Personnel from Service 107 carried out initial treatment at the scene. The suspect was subsequently transported under guard to a police station.

Experts from the Criminal Investigation Division worked at the scene, conducted a visual inspection and prepared the corresponding sketches. By order of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the case was initially classified as alleged wilful damage. The man is to be taken to the offices of the UFI CAVIG, where his procedural status will be determined.
