Esteban Allegrini, chief of the Uruguay Police Department, confirmed that the incident resulted from a fight between two people who had known each other previously.
Allegrini also revealed information provided by a witness: at the moment the dispute began at the residence located at Entre Ríos 56, an 11-year-old son of the victim was present, who fled running from the home.
When police and emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, Geist was alone, with signs of violence in the surroundings and cuts to his face, neck and one of his forearms.
Under instructions from prosecutor María José Labalta, police formalised the arrest of the suspect. Authorities ruled out robbery as a motive for the crime and continue to carry out expert examinations to determine the causes of the fatal altercation.
The case constitutes the second homicide recorded in the province during the same week. The previous Tuesday, Ramón Alejandro Báez, 53, was found dead in a rural area of San José de Feliciano with a severe blow to the front of his head. For that crime in the northern part of the province, a 34-year-old cousin of the victim remains in detention.
