Wife and daughter arrested in connection with mechanic's death in Moreno
A 41-year-old mechanic was found dead with over 20 stab wounds at his home in the locality of La Reja, in the Buenos Aires district of Moreno, according to losandes.com.ar. Following the homicide, his wife Elizabeth Castellano, 42, and his daughter Florencia, 23, were detained, as the courts attempt to determine whether the women acted in self-defence against alleged assaults.
The incident occurred last Monday at a house located on Calle San Nicolás at number 3300, in the Atalaya neighbourhood. A patrol car from the seventh police station arrived at the scene, where officers found a young woman in a state of shock and the body of a man lying on the matrimonial bed, surrounded by blood. The body also had a plastic bag placed over the head.
The victim was identified as Alberto Federico Aráoz Arecena, who lived with his wife and children at the property.
Castellano told police that the victim had been exercising physical and psychological violence against her and her daughter for some time, and that they had had an argument on the day of the crime. According to investigators, the incident occurred in front of the couple's minor children. Both women refused to give statements to prosecutor Carina Saucedo, who is in charge of the case, and were detained by court order.
The principal hypothesis suggests that one of them took a knife and attacked the man in the neck, whilst the other placed a bag over his head until causing asphyxiation. The exact circumstances of the episode remain under investigation.
A preliminary autopsy report determined that Aráoz Arecena received at least 20 stab wounds in different parts of his body and suffered a fatal injury to the trachea. Investigators were awaiting the definitive results of the forensic examination to establish with precision the causes of death.
Sources cited by Clarín indicated that there were no previous reports of gender-based violence registered in police and judicial systems. However, according to reporting by the portal Primer Plano Online, both women presented bruising in different parts of their bodies with different stages of healing, a fact that investigators took into account.
Testimony from neighbours also forms part of the lines of investigation. According to their accounts, screams were frequently heard at the property and the mechanic maintained a conflictive relationship with part of the neighbourhood.
