Uruguayan drug trafficker murdered in Buenos Aires: he had already been targeted in August

Murder in Buenos Aires of Uruguayan drug trafficker with criminal record since being a minor

Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, aged 31 and linked to the criminal gang Los Puglia from the Villa Española neighbourhood of Montevideo, was shot dead on Sunday inside an apartment in Buenos Aires that he had rented the previous day through a digital platform. According to reports based on police sources, concrete threats against his life had existed for at least two months.

Migales' criminal history began when he was a minor. At the age of 20, in 2014, he was imprisoned for armed robbery. Over time he accumulated a record for drug trafficking and subsequently for murder. Despite having no blood ties to Los Puglia, he became a prominent figure within that group, dedicated to the sale of narcotics. Police also link him to individuals from the Marconi neighbourhood.

The failed assassination attempt on 1 August in Villa Colón

Shortly after one o'clock in the morning on Saturday 1 August, Migales' BMW came under gunfire as it circulated through the intersection of Santa María and Montalvo in Villa Colón. Migales was not in the vehicle, but rather a relative of his, aged 31, with a record for smuggling, and that relative's partner, aged 30.

The attackers were travelling in a white van equipped with sirens and a false police licence plate. They posed as officers and, when the driver slowed down, opened fire believing the occupant was Migales himself. The mistake foiled the murder attempt. The relative was wounded by gunshots to the back, arm and leg, though not in critical condition; his partner was unharmed.

Investigation in Argentina

In Buenos Aires, the Federal Police are investigating Migales' death as a settling of accounts. His partner, who was with him in the apartment, sustained no injuries. Two people were detained one kilometre from the residence. Investigators also seized a weapon with a silencer and are analysing whether it corresponds to the murder weapon.
