Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, a 31-year-old Uruguayan with an extensive police record, was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday in an apartment located at Costa Rica 5200, in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo, according to eldoce.tv.
The victim was in the dwelling with his wife, María Mercedes, 27, who witnessed the attack and was unharmed. According to judicial sources, between three and four people entered the apartment without forcing the door or lock and fired repeatedly at Migales Viera, who died at the scene.
The investigation was taken up by National Criminal and Correctional Court Number 26, which is seeking to establish the circumstances and motive for the crime. Investigators are analysing a possible attack with mafia characteristics.
Profile of the deceased: criminal record from age 15
Migales Viera's criminal history began in 2009, when he was 15 years old. Since then he accumulated records in Montevideo for robbery, prison escape, disorderly conduct, drug-related offences and crimes against property. In 2016 he was detained for drug trafficking and in 2024 he was implicated in a case involving aggravated homicide. His criminal record also included arrests for firearm discharge, assault and another homicide.
A source in the investigation described him as "a small-time drug trafficker" who in recent times "was making a name for himself". The man was known to Uruguay's National Anti-Drug Brigade, the Investigations Division and the Highway Police.
Two arrested and one weapon recovered
Following the attack, the City Police deployed an operation in the area and arrested two suspects near the intersection of Avenida Santa Fe and Intendente Bullrich, approximately ten blocks from the crime scene. During the procedure a firearm was found that is believed to have been discarded from a fleeing vehicle. The weapon will be subjected to expert examination to determine whether it was used in the homicide.
