Harsh sentences sought for Maradona's doctors in Argentina
The public prosecutor's office has demanded sentences of up to twelve years in prison against seven professionals who were part of the healthcare circle of deceased football star Diego Maradona.
The South American star died in November 2020, at the age of sixty. His relatives questioned how the death occurred, which led to accusations against a group of seven specialists—including doctors, psychiatrists and nursing staff—for alleged medical negligence in home treatment. The defendants reject the charges.
On Thursday, the closing arguments of the oral trial began, where representatives of the Public Ministry argued that the number ten was neglected by a group of healthcare workers described as disorganised. Maradona had undergone brain surgery due to a blood clot. After his discharge, he remained under observation at his residence, but died fifteen days later from cardiac failure accompanied by fluid accumulation in the lungs.
The final debate will continue for approximately fifteen days, and the judicial decision will be handed down at a later date.
