Argentine police confiscated 52 kilogrammes of maximum purity MDMA in an operation carried out in the Buenos Aires municipality of Zárate, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the National Security Ministry. According to infobae.com, the shipment was found hidden in different compartments of a vehicle located at the city's bus terminal.
The authorities highlighted that the seized substance would have allowed the production of "approximately one million ecstasy pills" and described the operation as "the largest seizure of synthetic drugs recorded to date in Argentine history".
The procedure was carried out with the collaboration of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States. The investigation had begun in March following information provided by that body regarding the activities of a transnational criminal organisation attempting to introduce large quantities of synthetic drugs into the country.
"Based on that information, the investigation advanced regarding the criminal structure and the people involved in the receipt and logistics of the shipment," the official statement noted.
As a result of the operation, three people were detained: a Mexican citizen, a Venezuelan, and an Argentine, whose names were not disclosed. The courts also issued an international arrest warrant against another Mexican citizen linked to the organisation.
