A police officer shot his pregnant colleague in the back inside the 34th Police Station in San Juan. Mother and child are out of danger following surgery.
Accidental shooting at San Juan police station wounds six-month pregnant officer
According to lanacion.com.ar, a police officer fired on a pregnant colleague on Monday inside the 34th Police Station of the La Bebida sectional, in Rivadavia Department, San Juan Province. The victim, officer Mariana Jofré, 29 years old and in her sixth month of pregnancy, was struck by the bullet in the back while there were six other people present at the location.
Jofré was admitted to Sanatorio Cimyn, where doctors successfully removed the bullet from her body. She was discharged on Thursday. Both she and her baby are out of danger and progressing favourably following the surgical intervention.
The Public Prosecutor's Office reconstructed the facts based on testimony from those present. Officer Cristian Albarracín lent his regulation firearm to a colleague with the surname Castro so he could participate in a pursuit. Upon returning, Castro handed back the pistol with a bullet in the chamber. Albarracín handled it without realising it was ready to fire, and the shot struck Jofré in the back.
The court charged Albarracín with negligent injury in ideal concurrence with breach of duties as a public official. For now, the investigation is treating the episode as an accident.
During the formalisation hearing, judge Federico Rodríguez set an eight-month deadline for the preparatory criminal investigation. Albarracín will face the proceedings in freedom, but under conditions: he must present himself once a month at the 15th Police Station, is prohibited from leaving the country without prior authorisation, and cannot interfere with evidence collection or the case proceedings.
The defence of the accused, handled by lawyer Alberto Gil, did not object to any of the restrictions set by the court. The case was initially publicised by local media outlet Diario Provincial San Juan.
