Mariana Sol Jofré, a 29-year-old police officer, received her medical discharge on Thursday after undergoing surgery to remove the bullet lodged in her body. According to confirmation from the woman's relatives to sanjuan8.com, post-surgical recovery was favourable and her six-month pregnancy is also continuing in good condition.
Jofré had been admitted to CIMYN Sanatorium, where she underwent surgical intervention to remove the bullet. Given her positive progress, doctors decided to discharge her and the officer will continue her recovery at her home.
The shooting occurred within the police facility
The incident took place last Monday while Jofré was on duty in the records section of the 34th Police Station at La Bebida. The bullet struck her in the left lower back area and remained lodged in her body until Thursday's intervention.
Her colleague Cristian Exequiel Albarracín was formally charged in connection with the incident, accused of reckless injury. The officer continues the process in freedom. The Public Prosecutor's Office, represented by Nicolás Schiattino and Facundo Romero, obtained an eight-month period to investigate the circumstances in which the discharge occurred.
The sequence reconstructed at the hearing
According to the reconstruction presented during the formalisation hearing, Albarracín was behind Jofré at the moment of the shot. Previously, he had gone out together with another officer surnamed Castro to attend a procedure involving a person who was allegedly threatening neighbours with a firearm.
Upon returning to the police station, Castro returned the standard-issue weapon used during that operation to Albarracín. According to the investigative line, the pistol apparently remained loaded when it returned to Albarracín's hands. As the officer was handling the weapon, the discharge occurred that struck Jofré in the back.
The Public Prosecutor's Office maintains, in principle, that there would have been no intention to shoot her, although it is investigating whether there was reckless conduct in the handling of the weapon.
Ongoing investigation with several outstanding matters
The case still has several aspects to be clarified. Among the measures incorporated are statements from police officers who were at the facility at the time of the incident, expert examinations of the weapon involved, and analysis of security camera recordings. One of those recordings, moreover, was to be formally incorporated into the case file through the corresponding chain of custody.
With Jofré now in home recovery, the investigation will continue focused on reconstructing the exact sequence that ended with the discharge inside the police station and determining the responsibilities that may apply.
