A pregnant San Juan police officer who was six months pregnant was shot by a colleague whilst carrying out administrative duties at a police facility, reported canal26.com. The victim, identified as Mariana Sol Jofré, aged 29, remained hospitalised for four days and was discharged this Friday.
The incident occurred on Monday morning at the 34th Police Station in La Bebida, located in Rivadavia department. At that time, Jofré was carrying out administrative tasks alongside other members of the force.
Her colleague, identified as Cristian Exequiel Albarracín, was handling a firearm when the shot was fired. The projectile struck the officer in the back.
Jofré was attended to immediately and urgently transferred to Rawson Hospital, where she was admitted in delicate condition. She was later transferred to CIMYN Sanatorium, where she remained hospitalised and underwent surgical intervention to remove the bullet lodged in her body.
The medical professionals who followed her progress indicated that both the officer and her pregnancy were in good condition following the operation. After four days of hospitalisation, Jofré was discharged and returned to her home; she is to continue her recovery with periodic medical check-ups to monitor her own progress and that of the baby.
The situation generated relief amongst her family members, particularly given the favourable outcome recorded following surgery.
Jofré has been a member of the San Juan Police Force for approximately three years and is the mother of an 8-year-old girl. During her career in the force she has performed various functions: according to an account from a family member, she participated in arrests, operations at stadiums and additional duties.
Justice is investigating the circumstances of the episode and is analysing as the main hypothesis that it was an accident resulting from alleged negligent handling of the firearm. The investigation will need to determine the state of the firearm at the moment of the shot and reconstruct the sequence of events that resulted in the officer being injured inside the police station.
As the case progresses, Jofré continues her recovery at her home under medical supervision.
