According to diariopopular.com.ar, a 29-year-old San Juan police officer six months pregnant was shot by a colleague inside the 34th Police Station at La Bebida in the Rivadavia district. The victim, identified as Mariana Jofré, underwent surgery and was discharged from hospital on Friday after recovering well along with her pregnancy.
The incident occurred on Monday whilst Jofré was carrying out administrative duties at the station. Her colleague, Cristian Albarracín, was standing a few metres away handling his service weapon when a shot went off. The bullet struck the officer and became lodged in her body. Jofré was rushed to CIMYN Sanatorium, where doctors extracted the bullet through surgery.
According to the hypothesis being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, Albarracín had previously taken part in a pursuit alongside another officer with the surname Castro. At the conclusion of the operation, Castro allegedly returned the weapon to Albarracín apparently loaded and without warning him that it contained ammunition. Albarracín was standing behind Jofré at the moment he began handling the weapon.
Following the operation, Jofré remained hospitalised until Friday. Medical reports indicated that both the officer and her pregnancy are progressing in good condition.
As a result of the incident, Albarracín was formally charged. The court set a deadline of eight months to investigate the exact circumstances of the discharge. The officer remains free whilst the legal proceedings continue.
